Building backlinks (also known as linkbuilding), is an essential part of SEO. It is the technique of getting other websites to link to your website. When the search engines rank or index a website, they always look at the number of links coming from other sites. They also look at the page rank of the websites and their content. The greater the number of quality backlinks, the higher will be the position of the website in the search engine results and your traffic as well. SEO is therefore one of the good ways to make money online. Links on other related sites also drive targeted traffic to your website. The following are some ways to build backlinks to your site:–

(i) Directory submission: Submit your site to different online directories. Try to list your site on DMOZ, which is a very reputed online directory. You may submit to free directories as well as paid directories such as, Yahoo, Business.com etc.

(ii) Blog commenting: This is a very widely used way to build backlinks for a site. Make useful comments on different ‘Do Follow’ blogs. But make sure that you make useful comments and do not spam.

(iii) Forum posting: Become member of different online forums, which are relevant to your niche. Make regular posts in those forums. Put the URL of your website in the signature. This is a quick way to build a lot of backlinks to your site.

(iv) Articles and press releases: Write good quality articles on different topics relevant to your niche. Submit these articles to reputed article directories like Ezinearticles, GoArticles, Articlebase etc. The ‘Resource Box’ or ‘Bio Box’ at the end of each article should contain the URL of your website. Press release writing and submission is also a good way to build backlinks and to drive traffic.

(v) Social bookmarking: Submit your site to different social bookmarking sites like Digg, del.icio.us, reddit.com, Stumble Upon etc.

(vi) Link Exchange: You may exchange links with other sites which are relevant to your niche. You may also rent links from reputed link brokers like Text Link Ads, Text Link
Brokers etc.

(vii) Classified sites: Give ads on different classified sites like USFreeads, Gumtree etc.

(viii) Others: Give answers to questions on Yahoo!Answers. In your answer, you may provide the link to your website as an online resource. You can join relevant Google Groups and participate in the discussions.
