Shouldn’t Steve Jobs send mad TV writers a check?

Mad TV writers Bruce McCoy and Tami Sagher came up with the iPad name in 2005. They wrote a sketch that mashed together a feminine hygiene commercial and an iPod spot.

They aren’t really expecting a payout from Apple. but they can joke about it.

“I found out from Bruce” about the name, Tami said on NPR’s All things Considered this afternoon. “Actually, from his Twitter, because he tweeted a couple of minutes before it was announced that if it is called iPad, then he wants a residual check.”

As for the sketch: “This one we wrote rather quickly, which is usually the sign of a good sketch, when it just flows out of you, no pun intended. I’m sorry,” McCoy said.

6. Apple doesnt get viruses , Pc does , well if u get a good anti virus it wont , but mac doesnt need an anti virus …

7. Macs are made of up 100 percent recycable …. thingies xD glass and aluminum … ELEMENTS yess xD

8. this point is really weak but still matters , Apple machines look way awesomer than pc , please dont be stubborn and admit it :(

9 . PC laptops are usually made up of alot of parts which include seperation lines which makes it look bad :S while macs are unibodys ( this point is kinda weak too )

10 . PLEASE GUYS , DONT GET MAD !! why is this a big argument !! The only thing i see pc better in is prices and thats because they dont have the 9 points i just stated in macs !!!!

i admit some apple stuff is pretty usless like apple TV or ipad , but theyr operating machines like macbook , macbook pro , imac , theyr awesome

OK, while I’m quite impressed with Apple’s latest creation — I had the chance to play around with it last week in San Francisco — it’s hard to deny the name is easy to pick on. Yes, it sounds an awful lot like a feminine hygiene product. Coincidentally enough, MAD TV did a joke about such as product a while back. Viewer discretion is advised!

Apple worth more than Microsoft

Posted by On June - 9 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This story ran in Thursday’s Seattle Times.

It was the day a million iPads trumped a billion PCs.

On Wednesday, Apple passed Microsoft to become the world’s most valuable technology company based on market capitalization.

While the two may end up trading positions for weeks and months to come, the unseating of the Redmond software giant captures the rise of consumer gadgets over workhorse corporate software.

Microsoft continually has dismissed Apple for its single-digit percentage of the PC market. With the launch of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, however, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has continually dazzled Wall Street traders with the new, new thing.

Traders appear somewhat bored by Windows and Office, even if the software continues to rake in billions of dollars.

As Roger Sterling said in the TV show “Mad Men” about ad accounts, “Old business is just old business.”

Microsoft stock fell 4 percent Wednesday to close at $25.01, which figures out to a market capitalization of $219.1 billion. Apple stock fell 0.5 percent to close at $244.11, giving the company a market capitalization of $222.1 billion.

Market capitalization is the share price times outstanding shares, a common measure of how much the stock market values a company.

“It’s mostly symbolic,” said Matt Rosoff, analyst at Directions on Microsoft, an independent research firm in Kirkland. “Apple built a lot of new businesses; they’ve been able to be successful in those businesses. they also started from a smaller base.”

To compare the two company’s financial performance, Microsoft had $14.6 billion in profit on $58.4 billion in sales in fiscal 2009. It says 1 billion people use Windows.

Apple had a profit of $5.7 billion on $36.5 billion in sales in fiscal 2009.

Microsoft is trading at a stock price 12.83 times earnings, also known as a price-to-earnings ratio. Apple’s stock is trading at 24 times earnings.

The wide gap is a sign of Wall Street’s faith in Apple’s future potential earnings and that its stock will continue to leap and bound.

Microsoft’s price-to-earnings ratio represents the sentiment that the company has less room to grow.

“Microsoft has a slightly slower growth profile that’s reflected in the valuation,” said Sid Parakh, analyst at McAdams Wright Ragen. His 12-month price target for Microsoft is $38 a share.

The drop in Microsoft’s stock comes on the heels of Tuesday’s news that two video-game veterans are leaving the company. Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices division, is retiring, and J Allard, a senior vice president in the division, is leaving but will remain a consultant for Chief Executive Steve Ballmer.

The company’s stock had been dropping through May after trading near a 12-month high in April.

Apple and CEO Steve Jobs have been riding a high, launching the iPad tablet device in April and selling 1 million units since. the iPad represents a triumph of sorts over Microsoft, which had the head start many years ago with its work on tablet PCs.

Going back over the past decade, though, Microsoft’s stock has hovered between $24 and $34 a share, while Apple’s stock has risen from less than $10 to more than $200 a share.

In 1997, Microsoft stepped in to help Apple with a $150 million investment, when its rival was trading at $7 a share.

“Microsoft stock price has pingponged for the past 10 years. It hasn’t really gone up or down,” Rosoff said. “Apple’s has gone up significantly.”

Analysts say the market capitalization will not fundamentally change how Microsoft will do business. the company declined to comment, but executives have said in the past that all they can do is focus on execution, not the stock market.

“I don’t think the notion of their market cap being slightly lower than Apple’s is going to fundamentally drive how they run that business,” Parakh said.

The only thing Microsoft can do is to make products that consumers like, such as Windows 7, he said. “Clearly it just boils down to long-term strategy execution.”

Update 11:41 a.m.:

The gap had narrowed again as of mid-day Thursday.

Microsoft stock is up a few percentage points in intraday trading to $26 per share, pushing its market capitalization up to $228 billion and closing the gap with Apple. Shares of apple were also up a few percentage points to around $252, making its market capitalization $229.4 billion.

Update 2:58 p.m.:

Apple ended Thursday ahead of Microsoft with a market cap of $230.5 billion compared to Microsoft’s $227.9 billion.

Microsoft shares rose 4 percent to close at $26 and Apple shares increased 4 percent to $253.35.

The average user doesn’t care about a “closed system” or “walled garden.” they care about the ease of use that is born of the tight integration between hardware and software. they care about what works for them, and not at all about what’s “missing” in a particular device for others.

Like it or not, Apple — along with its developers — continues to accrue tremendous profits on products that, according to some, are “useless toys,” “derivative,” and built for those hypnotized by the Apple brand. As for the latter, apparently Steve Jobs is adept at persuading tens of millions of people to purchase products at a premium price that they neither want nor need.

Little wonder that Apple’s market cap sits right between that of Google and Microsoft.

All the whining in the world will not erase Apple’s unbridled success.

The “closed system” argument is blown way out of proportion. there are ~150,000 apps for the iPhone, and ~5,000 apps for the iPad in addition to the iPhone apps that can be run on the iPad. Granted, not every application is going to break a million in sales. But, apparently, there are many developers who are more interested in enhancing their skills, presence in the industry and bank accounts than they are concerned about some esoteric attachment to a more “open” means of developing for Apple’s devices.

Cutting off one’s nose in order exact revenge against one’s face has historically proved to be a poor strategy in business, finance, and interpersonal relationships.

From Joe Hewitt, Facebook iPhone developer:

“The one thing that makes an iPhone/iPad app ?closed? is that it lives in a sandbox, which means it can?t just read and write willy-nilly to the file system, access hardware, or interfere with other apps. in my mind, this is one of the best features of the OS. It makes native apps more like web apps, which are similarly sandboxed, and therefore much more secure. on Macs and PCs, you have to re-install the OS every couple years or so just to undo the damage done by apps, but iPhone OS is completely immune to this.”

Taiwanese Lin Yu Chun Sings Whitney Houston’s “I Will always love You” LIVE

Lin sings Dolly Parton classic on Taiwanese talent show, giving his all for chance at $1 million prize. (Parton wrote and first recorded the song, which Whitney Houston later recorded.)I didn’t allow automatically-posted comments on the video until 4 days after uploading it. I think the number of views for this video would have been much higher had I just allowed comments to be posted automatically from the start. just something to keep in mind.Interview with the now-world famous Lin Yu Chun (in Mandarin Chinese):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyKTaFUOtlw When I posted this video of Lin Yu Chun singing, I knew that it would get a large response, but I had no idea how large! so many people from around the world have commented about how much they enjoyed the video, just as I was blown away when I first came across it. I see a lot of the comments that are sent to this channel, and I have been amazed at their overwhelmingly positive nature. Sure, there are a few mean ones, but those are actually rare. My faith in humanity is renewed. =)Way to go, Lin Yu Chun!below is from: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wirestory?id=10327746&page=1Taiwan singer hits all the right notes as YouTube clip goes viralBy ANNIE HUANGThe Associated PressTAIPEI, Taiwan As a younger man, Taiwan’s Lin Yu-chun sang for hours on end, trying to get his mind off the sneers he endured because of his portly figure. The round-faced soprano with the bowl haircut never imagined his voice would one day transform him into an international sensation.but now, he is being compared to Britain’s Susan Boyle, the plain-looking 48-year-old who shot to stardom after singing “I Dreamed a Dream” on “Britain’s Got Talent.”Lin’s Whitney Houston-like rendition of “I Will always love You” on Taiwan’s “Avenue to Stardom” talent show last Friday has already racked up some 1.3 million views on YouTube, and the number is climbing fast. For the 24-year-old with the disparaging nickname of “Little Fatty,” the event has been a life-changer.”I now have more confidence in pursuing a singing career,” Lin told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “You don’t have to be a good-looking man or woman to succeed. just be yourself and try your best.”Lin said he had long suffered from a lack of self-confidence because of his plain looks and rotund figure.”Being fat draws a lot of mockery in our society,” he said.to cope with the pain of his exclusion, he locked himself in his room and sang along with the songs of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey.but the artist who really grabbed him was Houston — particularly the song “I Will always love you,” from the soundtrack to the 1992 film “The Bodyguard.”"I played it again and again even though my parents couldn’t stand it any more and asked me to stop,” Lin said.Lin has had a bumpy start to stardom. After graduating from college last year, he failed to make much of an impression on another Taiwanese talent show, where judges criticized both his looks and his high-pitched voice.”One said I should instead pursue the career of a comedian, and another questioned whether it was right for a man to sing soprano,” he said.now all that is behind him.”(The show) has reinvigorated me,” he said.Still, Lin said, he is doing his best not to let his new found fame go to his head.”I’m trying not to be overwhelmed,” he said.
