I’ve been browsing through Apple’s website this morning and have seen the new iPad. from first sight, it looks exactly like a larger than life version of the iPod touch, and when reading reviews and specs, I have realised that this is what the iPad actually is. However, I can see some serious practical issues with said device, being that it is far too large to fit in the pocket or even a small bag, making walking along the street listening to music impractical and a mugging hazard. It does not do anything more than the average iPod touch or laptop, and for the much-hyped ‘internet surfing’, the user has to be in a location with wifi connection. There is no USB port, ruling it out as a laptop replacement, and to type a long essay, the iPad would have to be laid flat on a table, making the user strain to see the screen, unlike the traditional laptop.

Overall? I would say the iPad is an unnecessary, overhyped gadget with no real use. However, I would be interested in hearing other peoples’ opinions, so leave them below and tell me what you think!

An iPhone won’t get you dressed in the morning — but it can help. Fashion apps for the popular phones are multiplying almost daily, with entries from major designers, retailers and magazines, among others.

One huge entry in the field comes from eBay, which recently launched an app that it expects “will double its $600 million gross fashion merchandise volume of last year to $1.5 billion this year,” according to Women’s Wear Daily.

“We realized that fashion lovers are passionate about this product area,” said Steve Yankovich, eBay’s vice president of mobile platform. “They want to be immersed in it, they want inspiration, and they want selection and deals, and our app is a unique shopping experience that offers all of that.”

While there are fashion apps for other technologies, iPhone seems to be leading the way. “Right now, there are more and better app titles available for iPhones than Android,” says Chris DeVore, co-founder of AppStoreHQ, a website that helps customers discover apps for both Apple and Android devices.

A quick search for the word “fashion” in the iTunes store reveals more than 550 apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Designers such as Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana use their apps to showcase new lines and stream runway presentations. Magazines such as GQ and Glamour see the chance to expand digitally. other apps play the role of “trend-spotters,” and are filled with pictures of stylish people from

Glamour ask a Stylist,

H H H Snap a picture of your outfit, and within minutes a Glamour styling expert will let you know whether it’s a hit or a miss. “This kind of application is for times when you’re stuck in a change room, wishing your sister or best friend were there to help you make a style decision,” says Jennifer Mahoney, a representative for the app.

WASHINGTON – do you own an iPad? There’s a new app you might want to check out.

It’s called the Flipboard. It takes your Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and other social content and presents it as a digital magazine spread.

CEO Mike McCue tells USA TODAY he got the idea for the Flipboard while on a flight with a stack of magazines.

The free app was launched last month, and so many people tried downloading it that the company had to start taking reservations.

Supply has now caught up to demand and you no longer need to reserve it.

By her own admission, Alison Hinch cannot live without her mobile-device applications.

The 31-year-old graphic designer from New Jersey maintains a whopping 143 applications (better known as apps) on her iPhone, plus another 149 on her iPad.

Hinch has an app for everything.

She has one that controls her home computer, one that monitors her sleep cycle and another that updates the family grocery list. she even has an app called BaconFarts to entertain her 2-year-old son, who finds the bacon-themed flatulence machine hilarious.

“The only time I’m not using my apps is for a few hours on the weekends during the day,” she says. “I would agree that I’m an addict.”

And Hinch is not alone.

Whether they’re downloading programs for iPhones, iPads, Droids or a generic smartphone, many New Yorkers increasingly find themselves obsessed with mobile apps.

“I am really into my iPhone apps,” says James Gregson, director of DKC Connect, who keeps more than 60 programs on his phone. “I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on them. I have apps that dictate, order my groceries and control my television. the iPhone has completely changed my life.”

The obsession with apps borders on addiction.

“I think that this is certainly an area of great concern where psychiatrists and other mental-health professionals could offer help,” says Dr. Petros Levounis, director of the Addiction Institute of New York at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. “I’m not quite sure if it meets the criteria of a bona fide addiction, but there is no question that people have gotten in significant trouble with cell-phone technology.”

Levounis lays out the warning signs for the loosely defined “app addiction.”

“The things to look for would be an inability to cut down, neglect of significant professional and personal responsibilities because of consistent use, and the feeling that their life is out of control because of their constant use of technology,” he says. “But we haven’t had that much experience with this kind of problem. I wouldn’t be surprised if, as more data come in, we develop more of an appreciation for this type of addiction.”

One thing is for sure: There is no shortage of apps, especially for Apple users. There are already almost 6,000 apps for the iPad, which was only released in early April, and more than 250,000 for the iPhone alone.

The number of apps continues to grow by the minute. according to NewMacOnline.com, every 2.5 minutes another app goes to Apple for approval.

Amazon is preparing an updated Kindle that will roll out in August. But unlike earlier speculation that suggested Amazon would aim to compete with the iPad by releasing an upgraded product that delivers a more dynamic platform, it now appears that the Kindle isn’t yet ready to compete as aggressively with the iPad as previously thought.

Later this summer, Amazon will introduce a new and improved Kindle that will deliver a sharper picture and a thinner body. That’s according to a new report from Bloomberg this weekend, citing anonymous sources at the company. the next-generation unit won’t serve up color or boast a touch screen, but it will be “more responsive,” say those familiar with the forthcoming release. last week, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos informed an audience of shareholders that color and touch screens are envisioned for the “long term” and “in the laboratory, but they are not quite ready for production.”

Quote:
Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said this week that the company was concentrating on wooing committed book readers.
When the New York Times reported in February that Amazon wanted the Kindle to be an iPad killer, they pointed to Amazon’s recent purchase of Touchco, a developer of flexible multitouch panels. With heightened expectations now dramatically lowered, it appears we may be a few more generations away from the Kindle being a versatile-enough product to compete with the iPad – assuming, of course, that Amazon even wants to compete with Apple in this market. from introduction to present day, the Kindle has remained remarkably successful even following the iPad’s thunderous arrival.
