iPad rivals streaking on ahead

NEW ZEALAND’S Apple fans may be itching to get their hands on an iPad, but the delay in its local release is allowing buyers to weigh alternative gadgets.
The iPad, due for launch here this month, is undoubtedly cool and slick – and it integrates with the iTunes software so many of us now use. A growing slew of business and productivity applications also provides plausible deniability against accusations of frivolity.
but if you already have a smart phone and a separate plan with a data stick for your laptop, you may baulk at signing up for yet another telco tax for your iPad. Vodafone, for instance, last week announced that it would soon offer “dedicated iPad price plans for iPad with wi-fi 3G”.
However, the market is moving fast and the iPad won’t be the only game in town for long. Hardware makers are jumping on the opportunity offered by Google’s mobile operating system Android to release a host of new phones and phone/slate crossover devices.
Pure tablet computers running Android aren’t far away either
